Fall Fun For the Dimensions Learning Community

October is the start of the season that includes gold and red leaves all around, the smell of pies, stews and hot soups, and lots of fun for our Learning Community!  Join us for the annual trek to Jerry Smith’s Pumpkin Farm.  We have two special evenings planned.  The first is Thursday October 15 for our Family Evening at the Pumpkin Farm.  Come to Jerry Smith’s in Somers township from 5:00-7:00 p.m. for hayrides, petting zoo, pumpkin picking and ohhhh those cookies too!  The second event is for our middle schoolers.  The October middle school social will be at Jerry Smith’s on Friday October 24th from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.  The social is a pay as you go night.  Look on the Jerry Smith website for more details and costs.

Dr. Curt Hinson will be joining us at Dimensions of Learning Academy for an all school assembly on October 27th, 2014.  We are very excited to meet the man who helped us to develop our Fitness Break here at Dimensions.  His works have become the inspiration for our own Fitness Break Coordinator and Physical Fitness Instructor, Mrs. Hedman in developing our own unique Fitness Break programming, which promotes physical activity, fair play and social interaction as an alternative to traditional school recess time.
Curt Hinson, Ph.D., (also known as Doctor Recess) has been teaching for over 30 years. He taught at the elementary school level for 16 years and at the college level for over 14 years. He currently works as an educational consultant for PlayFit Education Inc., presenting staff development workshops for school districts, teachers, and students. In addition, he teaches in the on-line graduate program at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY and is an adjunct professor at Rowan University in New Jersey. Curt holds a PhD in Kinesiology from Temple University; a Master’s of Education degree from Widener University; and a BS degree in Health & PE from West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Dr. Hinson is the author of three books, Fitness for Children; Games Kids Should Play at Recess; and 6-Steps to a Trouble-free Playground. In addition, he has published over 50 articles related to teaching and is the creator of the “Trouble-free Playground” recess program for elementary schools.
Dr. Hinson has made presentations in all 50 states, as well as in Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. His practical, hands-on teaching techniques, along with his enthusiasm, make him one of the most dynamic educators in the country. He was the 1992 National Association for Sport and Physical Education Eastern District Teacher of the Year and the 1991 Delaware PE Teacher of the Year.

School Mission-  Our mission is to nurture students so that they learn to think for themselves. They will be encouraged to do their own research, analyze what they have found, and come to their own conclusions. We are committed to teaching students to think, not simply to memorize and then forget. They will learn how to learn, discovering that the process of learning can, and should, be as natural as breathing.
