Dimensions of Learning Academy opened it’s doors to students studying Kindergarten through eighth grade in 2000.  From the beginning members of our administration and staff sought to identify and implement ways to operate our school with a sense of environmental awareness.  Creating new and often innovative approaches

to successfully coordinate environmentally sound practices with the necessary operations of our dynamic educational facility, which serves a diverse socio-economic student base.  We began auditing our energy consumption and worked to establish energy operations plans to help reduce our contribution to pollutants and lessen the amount of gas and electricity that we consume (Smart Energy Management).

The founders of Dimensions of Learning also found ways to engage our “learning community” in outdoor activities including Happy Campers, field trips to state and local parks and preserves, annual family leaf raking parties and family fun days and nights in local outdoor arenas.  These practices became the platform for even greater opportunities to expand in areas of environmental exploration and partnerships.

On March 31, 2008 a planning committee met for the first time to discuss the formation of a new Dimensions organization expressly on subjects and interests that involved environmental issues.  The first planning committee included staff members, parent and student volunteers.  They continued to meet and postulate over the spring and summer months to explore more  ways to further connect with local, state and national programs that focused “green issues” and to lay the foundation for an unique approach that links the Dimensions Framework and environmental stewardship.

An agenda was synthesized into our Green Calendar and many hours were given in 2008-2009 (The Year of Planet Earth, EPA) to the expansion of a new club to address the many topics that could be considered to be “green” and to help create enrichment opportunities for those specifically interested in this kind of educational experience.  And so the Dimensions Green Initiative was created.

We believe in encouraging positive, dynamic and organic approaches to connecting people, ideas and action that creates respect for society and the world that we must share. We refer to this as environmental stewardship.

Our goal is to help provide enrichment opportunities for our staff, students, families and our local community that focus on the diversity of what it means to be “green” in our society today.  We seek to provide hands on educational experiences that include global environmental awareness, environmental history, environmental stewardship, climate and climate change, energy and resource conservation, technologies and engineering for environmental sustainability, bio energy,  personal and public health awareness, ecosystems, ecology and biodiversity, leadership, group participation and volunteerism that can cause positive change in the knowledge base and actions of humanity and it’s connection to the Earth.
